Elements of Sports Versus Elements of Sportsmanship
Introduction
When we talk about sports, we often use overlapping language that can create confusion. Two concepts that are frequently mixed together are elements of sports and elements of sportsmanship. While they're related, they're fundamentally different ideas. Understanding this distinction is crucial for grasping what makes sports valuable both as structured activities and as opportunities for character development.
Elements of Sports: The Framework
Elements of sports refer to the structural and technical components that define a particular sport. These include the rules of the game, the equipment, the playing area, and the objectives that participants must accomplish.
For example, in basketball:
The elements include a 10-foot hoop, a rectangular court, five players per side, and the objective of shooting a ball through the opponent's hoop
The rules specify how the ball can be handled, how fouls are called, and how points are scored
These elements are concrete and measurable. They define what the sport is and how it is played. Without these structural elements, you wouldn't have basketball—you'd have something else entirely.
Elements of Sportsmanship: The Ethics
Elements of sportsmanship are fundamentally different. They refer to the ethical behaviors and attitudes that athletes demonstrate during competition. Rather than defining the game structure, sportsmanship defines how the game should be played in terms of character and conduct.
Key elements of sportsmanship include:
Fairness: Playing by the rules and accepting decisions, even when you disagree with them
Self-control: Managing your emotions and staying composed during competition
Respect: Showing consideration for opponents, teammates, officials, and the game itself
Courage: Persisting through challenges and supporting others even in difficult moments
The image above shows tennis players shaking hands at the net—a classic display of respect and fairness. This behavior demonstrates sportsmanship, but it has nothing to do with the elements of tennis as a sport (the racket, the net height, the court dimensions, etc.).
Why This Distinction Matters
Here's the key insight: You can follow all the rules of a sport and still display poor sportsmanship, just as you can display excellent sportsmanship while playing within the rules.
For instance, a basketball player might technically follow every rule but refuse to congratulate an opponent after losing. They're following the elements of the sport, but violating the elements of sportsmanship.
Conversely, imagine a situation where an official makes an incorrect call in your favor. Following the rules of the sport allows you to accept the benefit, but sportsmanship would suggest alerting the official to the error—showing respect for fairness and the integrity of the game.
The team huddle pictured above demonstrates teamwork and unity—aspects of sportsmanship that strengthen the social and ethical dimensions of competition beyond what the sport's rules require.
The Relationship Between Both Elements
The two concepts work together but serve different purposes:
Elements of sports make competition possible and standardized
Elements of sportsmanship make competition meaningful and developmentally valuable
A sport can exist with only its structural elements (rules and equipment), but it becomes truly valuable when players also embody sportsmanship. This is why coaches and educators emphasize both: understanding the game's rules and developing ethical character are complementary goals.
The mutual respect shown between these athletes exemplifies sportsmanship—the ethical choice to compete with honor, regardless of the game's technical requirements.
